AAMI ST79 section 9.4 recommends periodic cleaning of sterilizer chambers.
Rationale: Periodic inspection and cleaning reduce the frequency of equipment malfunction and the risk of accidental contamination of sterile items.
If the inside surfaces of your sterilizers are covered with rust, greenish or black residue, that build-up can reduce sterilizer effectiveness and efficiency.
After several years of use, most sterilizers experience build-up of chamber walls and door linings. Processing sterile goods under these conditions can be at the least distasteful, but more importantly, can be less efficient than processing in a clean chamber. The heat radiation processes needs clean, uniform surfaces to insure a fully effective drying cycle. Having your sterilizer cleaned will keep it working efficiently and effectively.
